FCSC Gun Range History
In 2014, Les Ball, Len Humphries (Fremont County Sheriff), and Terry Harris (St. Anthony Police Chief) met with county and city officials to discuss the possibility of taking over the existing police range north of town and redesign the area to accommodate a complete public and law enforcement shooting range. Both county and city agreed that it would be beneficial to have a public shooting range for individuals, scouting, 4-H and training. That fall, interested patrons met and formed a new Board of Directors and the "Fremont County Sportsman's Club" was born. Les Ball worked very hard to get matching grants from the Idaho Fish and Game, Fremont County and the City of St. Anthony that were used to build the access road and parking lot for the new range as well as future work.
In the spring of 2015, President Scott Mace signed a lease agreement with the city and county for use of the land. He spent many days in the loader building earth berms on the lower and upper range and with that commitment the range opened two years ahead of schedule.
The concrete pads and tables were built with the following donations and labor.
Lower Range pistol/small bore rifle:
Donations from Bank of Idaho and St. Anthony Trading Post, with labor from Bob Bauer, Les Ball, Roy and Craig Batton, Frank Molle, Mike and Hunter Jones, Vincent Phillips and Rocky Mountain Power.
Upper ranges large bore rifle:
300 yard, donation from the Mace family with labor from Scott, Gene, Quin, Keenan, Jared, Kirk, Cole, and Luke Mace.
200 yard, donation from C and C Supply.
100 yard, donation from St. Anthony Supply.
50-25 yard, donation from Trost Feed and Seed.
Labor for these three came from Les Ball, Scott, Gene, Jared, and Cole Mace, Jason Davis, Ben Greenwood, Kent Frisby, Tim Brown and son, Harlen Standifer, Mike Jones, Reed Ellis, Neils Thueson, and Brian Hill.
Reed Ellis built and installed our sign-in station and cash box.
Harlen Standifer, with the help of other members, constructed the metal cover over the sign-in area.
A major effort was finished in September when all 29 concrete target bases were in place through the help of Gene, Scott, Jared and Cole Mace, Mike and Hunter Jones
Eagle scout projects built 8 of the bases and the gate at the entrance.
Allstate Machine Shop designed and manufactured the metal stools with St. Anthony Supply donating the paint and Gary's Auto Body Inc. donating labor to paint.
Lane Harris Farms donated straw bails for the Archery Range with labor from Lane and Shane Harris.
